Our star project on outfitting tapirs with GPS radiocollars has 4 years now!
Since 2021, Dr. Jorge has led succesfully more than 15 tapir physical and chemical immobilizations for outfitting them with GPS radiocollars to monitor their habitat use and movement patterns in both outside and inside protected areas.
This tool also allow us to monitor tapirs behavior and health in human-dominated landscapes, and to evaluate how tapirs utilize these areas.
You can follow tapir movements throught the phone app Animal Tracker! Browse for tapir and you can take a look at all radiocollared tapirs.
Click here to see a tapir capture videoThrough the camera traps -a non-invasive tool- we can monitor tapirs and other accompanying animals. We have deployed more than 100 camera traps across the Tenorio-Miravalles Biological Corridor (TMBC) in Northwestern Costa Rica.
We are currently expanding our camera trap network to another regions of Costa Rica including the Western Talamanca Highlands
See below for a video of a tapir feeding from the endangered and endemic tree from the Guanacaste Mountain Range called 'jicaro danto'. This footage was taken by one of our stations as part of our camera trap network at TMBC.
