Our project on the field of road ecology has as a main goal to mitigate the risk of tapir fatalities or being injured by collisions with vehicles.
Sadly, this is the main cause of mortality for tapirs across Costa Rica, counting more than 45 dead tapirs by this cause since 2010!
We are currently working at the Tenorio-Miravalles Biological Corridor and Western Talamanca Highlands to inform the decision-making by providing our ecological data. With this data, we can determine tapir-vehicle collision hotspots in the main roads from these regions to install mitigation strategies including wildlife crossing signs, speed bumps, and wildlife underpasses.
